Summer Fun in the DMV!

Summer is here, and there's no better way to spend it than on vacation with family and friends!

If you're looking to get outdoors on a warm day, enjoy some fresh air, and bond with loved ones- here are our favorite must-visit summer fun activities within driving distance of the D.C. area! Now that the weather has finally turned warm and sunny, school is out (or almost out!), what are you waiting for? The season for basking in the sun is here!

Pick-Your-Own Orchards

We are torn- which is better- Butler's Orchard or Great Country Farms? They are so great we have to recommend both to you! If you haven't had a chance to pick-your-own fruit, definitely visit a local farm this summer. Butler's Orchard in Maryland is closer to the center of the city and has a great selection of fruits throughout the summer and fall, a large play area, several festivals, some animals, and a cute market. Great Country Farms has a very expansive play area, animals, festivals, a wide variety of fruits, a CSA, and several local spots that have cropped up that offer wine, beer, and good eats. It's a full-day trip out in VA that's worth taking!

Spray Park

Our favorite is- Our Special Harbor in Alexandria, VA! Check out shaded Chessie's Backyard next to the spray park for a great playground for all ages and skill levels from the tiniest tots to the bigger kids! You can also time it with events at this Fairfax County park in the amphitheater or with a walk in the woods along their trails or sports on their fields. All around, this is a gem of a summer spot!

Pools and Waterparks

You either have a local neighborhood pool, live in DC where you can visit any public pool, or you've got your favorite private pool you always join. What about doing a waterpark or two this year for even more fun? Our favorite is Soak City at King's Dominion in Doswell, VA!

Outdoor Movies

Our favorite outdoor movie spot is- Union Market! You can treat yourself to some of the best and most delicious gourmet eats and then sprawl out under the stars and enjoy the movie. The best part is- you can still drive in there!

Summer Concerts

If you haven't heard our very own military bands perform, the summer is one of the best times to enjoy their talents in historic locations around the city. Our favorite is the summer concert series on the West Front Steps of the Capitol building on Friday nights at 8 pm. They haven't announced anything for this summer- so hopefully they'll resume the tradition! If not, check out the Air Force Band at National Harbor on Saturdays at 7 pm or the Navy Band at the Navy Memorial on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm.

Festivals

We really enjoy the Smithsonian Folklike Festival on the Mall surrounding Independence Day festivities each year, but our favorite festival is the Independence Day Parade and fireworks! It IS worth the crowds- at least once!

Seasonal Experiences

A boat ride along the Georgetown C&O canal- is definitely worth taking once! Another more adventurous option is to rent your own kayak or SUP at a boathouse along the Potomac. We're partial to our first date spot- Jack's Boathouse in Georgetown. Call me sentimental- ok, you're right!
